Crop Fields

All research will be conducted on a recently purchased 14-acre family farm in Zebulon NC. As many plant diseases on as many different crops as is feasible will be studied. A 2-acre parallelogram shaped field that was previously part of a horse pasture will be used for annual vegetables, field crops, and herbs. A 4-acre field with a moderate slope has been cleared from the woods for an orchard and perennials. Fruit trees, berry bushes, grape vines, and berry vines will be planted to create a 3-acre orchard with a grass ground cover to prevent erosion. A 1-acre section of the field will be planted with perennials including strawberries, turf grass varieties, grains, herbs, and over-wintered field crops. The back edge will also serve as a 1-hole golf course with a green in the right corner. A quarter-acre cleared area underneath the canopy of the crop border barrier woods will be used for shade-loving plants. A 1-acre barnyard pasture will be used to monitor grasses and weeds. A 2-acre wood with a newly added horse-riding trail and a quarter-acre driveway barrier woods will be used to monitor deciduous and evergreen trees. Annual flowers, native plants, and perennials will be grown throughout the property in various small plantings including a small man-made butterfly habitat pond. It is hoped that a 3-acre neighboring property can be purchased in the next few years to expand the area available for annual crops.
