Our DeMilia Research Farm, in Zebulon, NC (just outside of Bunn in Franklin County, NC) serves as a center for our agricultural research. Harvested produce from our agricultural research plots will not be sold online and can only be purchased by visiting us. Whether or not you live in NC, you can still sponsor a research plot. If you live in the Triangle Area, you can do a Harvest Plot Sponsorship which is a sponsorship with a deposit for purchasing the produce harvested from an research plot in our experimental trials. If you wish to provide additional support our agricultural research in a more general manner, then we deeply appreciate any donations.
Research Plot Sponsorship
You can sponsor a experimental field trial research plot and have your name put on the treatment marker for only $5. Your sponsorship message will also be visible next to the results of the research plot on our website. Your sponsorship message could be your name, a dedication name, or any other phrase that you like as long as it is a maximum 20 characters long and contains no offensive or inappropriate language. You'll be able to watch the progress of your sponsored plot throughout the growing season via time lapse photographs and research data posted on our website on a regular basis. Think of it as way to take part of our agricultural research from a distance. Only one person can sponsor an individual research plot for the year due to the limited space for messages on the flags and they will become available on a first-come first-serve basis. You can sponsor as many different research plots as you like including multiple replicates of the same crop row. A Research Plot Sponsorship is only valid for a single growing season and does not extend to the same research plot in subsequent calendar years. For annual crops where succession plantings occur, your sponsorship extends across all crops planted in that research plot for the calendar year, including cover crops. Research Plot Sponsorship and your other personal account features are accessed through your personal dashboard. If you already have a DeMilia Research account, then you can sponsor a research plot through the shopping cart. If you do not have a free DeMilia Research account, then you will be able to register here in the future.
It will be a few more weeks before our sponsorship purchase list shopping cart is live. In the interim, if you wish to purchase a Research Plot Sponsorship for 2016 Field Trials, then please make a donation for $5 via credit card or check then send an e-mail to email@example.com with the following information: 1) Last Name, 2) First Name, 3) E-mail address, 4) Plot Row (A1-A7.1-5, B1-B7.1-5, TG.1-10, GF.1-10, OV.1-10, SB.1-10, HB.1-10), 5) Plot Rep (1-4), Flag Color (Yellow=Control, Red=Pesticide 1, Orange=Pesticide 2, Blue=Organic 1, Purple=Organic 2), 6) Message (20 character max), 7) Show Online? (Yes or No). Example: 1) DeMilia, 2) Michael, 3) firstname.lastname@example.org, 4) A3.4, 5) 3, 6) Blue, 6) Go Plant Doc!, 7) Yes. If the plot you choose has already been taken then you will be assigned a different plot replicate of the same plot row as long as one is still available. Data collection will be limited during 2016 and we do not yet have the equipment for regular time lapse photographs. Nevertheless, we will endeavor to take at least a few photographs of sponsored research plots over the course of the growing season.
Harvest Plot Sponsorship
If you choose a Harvest Plot Sponsorship, then you are putting down a deposit to purchase the produce harvested from a experimental field trial research plot. The cost of a Harvest Plot Sponsorship depends upon the experimental treatment since one crop (e.g. tomatoes) might be more valuable than another (e.g., peas) and one treatment (e.g. organic) might be expected to produce higher yield than another (e.g., untreated control) or is more desirable than another (e.g., synthetic pesticide). Your name will be put on the back of the treatment flag and sponsorship info will also be visible next to the results of the research plot on our website just like a Research Plot Sponsorship. However, unlike a Research Plot Sponsorship, a Harvest Plot Sponsorship does not extend across succession plantings of different crops for annual crops or multiple harvests for perennials. Not all crop varieties (e.g., turfgrasses) will be available for Harvest Plot Sponsorship and the first replicate of each crop row will be kept for our own purposes. If you wish to display a sponsorship message on the treatment flag, then we suggest you also purchase a Research Plot Sponsorship for the same plot. You'll be able to watch the progress of your sponsored plot throughout the growing season via time lapse photographs and research data posted on our website on a regular basis. Think of it as way to take part of our agricultural research from a distance. Up to three succession planting Harvest Plot Sponsorships are available for each research plot for each growing season and they will become available on a first-come first-serve basis. You can sponsor as many different research plots as you like and as many succession plantings of the same research plot as you like. We will notify you when the research plot is harvested and let you know your pick-up window (e.g., 72 hours) for you to come to the farm and purchase it. Once your pickup window has expired, it will go on sale to the general public and you will lose your deposit. The length of your pickup window will depend upon how long we can store your produce without it going bad and how much storage space that we have available at the time. The final cost of the produce from a harvest sponsored research plot will not be known until it is weighed and adjustments are made for crop damage. You are not committed to make a final purchase until after you've inspected your produce and know the final cost. However, your deposit will not be refunded or reduced if you choose not to make a final purchase of the entire yield from an research plot. Of course, you can always purchase any alternate or additional produce that is available for sale at our produce stand at the time. A Harvest Plot Sponsorship is only available you live in the Triangle Area or know someone who can come to the farm to pick up your produce. We are not in the business of shipping produce since we do not harvest enough volume for it to be worth dealing with all the different produce import regulations for each state. It's not even worth it for us to ship produce within the State of North Carolina. A Harvest Plot Sponsorship is only valid for a single growing season and does not extend to the same treatment in subsequent years. Harvest Plot Sponsorship and your other personal account features are accessed through your personal dashboard. If you already have a DeMilia Research account, then you can sponsor a research plot through the shopping cart. If you do not have a free DeMilia Research account, then you will be able to register here in the future.
There will be no Harvest Plot Sponsorships for the 2016 growing season due to our current lack of storage facilities.
